Type 72D Update

Okay guys. My Type 72D is the first Elise in Houston to have the Lotus Sport factory supercharger kit installed. :D Am I the first Type 72D in the USA/Canada?

3128 is owned by someone in Delaware Ohio. I know he purchased it at MAG and it was around the timeframe specified. I don't think he is on this forum

You might be. I know there's at least 1 out there with an aftermarket SC, but you might be the first with the factory kit. It looks super clean!

Could you please share your impression of the kit. Noticeable improvement in power delivery? Cost? Would you recommend doing it?

Thanks,
Vince

I am very impressed. The big difference is low-to-mid range punch. The dealer did an exemplary top-notch job. Kudos to Star Motor Cars Aston Martin/Lotus service manager Les Costales who is very professional, enthusiastic, informative, and courteous. I encourage any Loti owners in the Houston area to avail themslves of service needs with Les. He sold me the kit for Lotus's suggested list of $4950 and charged $1358 for labor which was very reasonable considering the flawless and problem-free installation. I know you can get after-market superchargers that will produce more bang for the same or less buck. But, based on my sixties muscle car experience with my 1969 Z28 Camaro (yes, I'm THAT old!), factory Chevrolet racing parts never failed me while aftermarket parts always had their problems. The Lotus factory supercharger kit is specifically designed and tuned for the Elise and passes CARB standards. Bottom line, I opted for quality, compatibility, and reliability over extra HP. I can't belive that these aftermarket tuners know more about Loti than Lotus engineers. Richard Parriment, who is a member of Classic Team Lotus, agrees and shakes his head at how us Yanks toy with such a finely tuned car as the Lotus.

Just to add to the conversation, I had the Sector 111 Katana supercharger installed a year ago. Installation was done by a third party (Synaptic 3 Engineering in Candia, NH). My experience is virtually the same as Nikki's above. My understanding is that the Eaton MP62 supercharger is the same unit as installed by Lotus. I used a third party because, at that time, Lotus refused to install in unit in my 72D even though they were about to offer it as an option for the Elise.

Two principal differences: 1. I evidently voided a portion of my warranty (bad); and, 2. the tune was done by Charlie Wallace (good). I have had no warranty issues. I believe that the CharlieX tune could possibly be more aggressive than the Lotus tune, but I do not have real data to support this. Bottom line, the supercharger makes an incredible difference, no matter who does the installation.

Hey guys..first post here...Anywho, I found #31 of 50, VIN ending in 3006, it's up in Northern NJ, and the reason why I finally decided to stop lurking and to sign up. I hope to purchase a Lotus reaaal soon, namely #31...

I remember being around 19 or 20 and seeing a Type 72D for sale in Spanos Motors in daytona.
Called in and told them I was interested and went to go test drive it, arrive and get told that the car is on display at the airport and to pull it out would be a 2 grand non-refundable deposit.
I of course am not going to do such a thing site unseen, I'm told If I want to see it I got to drive to the airport.
I went and saw it, it was AMAZING, had a bizarre bike rack mount in the back near the exhaust. I didn't buy it because of how I was treated, but there is not a day I don't regret swallowing my pride and buying it as the price was CHEAP! even by base elise standards. It was like 27k clean title with the helmet along with it.
That's the only time I've ever seen a Type 72 edition.
Thought I'd share my story lol
